Questions to ask
your OB or Midwife.
While information is changing on a day-to-day basis, and your provider may not know that answers (or the answers may change!), it’s now more important than ever to know what your options will be while you are labouring and birthing.
What will happen if I am positive with Covid-19 while in labour?
While this is unlikely, you need to know what the procedures will be, who will be allowed in the room to support you, and where you will need to give birth. What areas will you have access to? These are all important things to know so you can best prepare for your birth.
What can I do to protect myself from getting Covid-19 while at the hospital?
If the hospital is your choice of birthplace (or it is now due to circumstances), how can you protect yourself, your partner, and your baby from contracting the virus? Will you be provided masks and gloves?
Will my partner be able to be with me for support?
No matter who the support person is that you would like at your birth (partner, family member, doula), will they be allowed in the birthing room? In triage? What if they are sick? Is there a secondary person you can call to come instead? What happens if I have to birth alone? Can I have video support in the birth room?
Will I need to leave the hospital early?
In order to limit potential exposure is it possible I may need to leave the hospital early? What options do I have for support if I leave earlier than normal? Telehealth check in? Virtual lactation support? How can I prepare for this? Any tools I may need (ex. themometer).
How do I get the most current information?
Since information is changing quickly, where can I find the most up-to-date information. Will I get a phone call closer to my due date? Only at check ups? Is there an email or website I can check in with?
